North of Ellingstring.....

To the immediate north is the Ure Valley {Wensleydale} with arable fields beyond stretching to the horizon

At the bottom of the valley below Ellingstring are the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey, a Cistercian monastery which dates back to 1145 and was destroyed in 1536 during the Dissolution

The monks, who once owned and ruled over Wensleydale, have a great claim to fame - the introduction of Wensleydale Cheese

It is possible to wander free of charge around the ruins, which have wild flowers that cling to the walls

Near the abbey is the Ure, a river that constantly changes its personality even over just a few yards; from being deep, still and wide, to rocky rapids and waterfalls. This below picture, was taken from Kilgram Bridge on the lane from Ellingstring, on a summers morning; the reflections in the water being very evident

There are no restrictions on walking the banks, along which it is possible to spot kingfishers; one can also fish for the small price of a permit.  A couple miles further on from Kilgam Bridge is Thornton Watlass Hall which features as Ashfordly Hall, the home of Lord Ashfordly, in Heartbeat

Several miles upstream are Asgarth Falls, where the river tumbles over four separate waterfalls. These were used for filming the fight scene with Kevin Costner in Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves
