South of Ellingstring.....

The south and south west of Ellingstring provides the greatest contrast of landscape; the heather moors to the south extend for as far as the eye can see and beyond but these are initially bordered by forests and high grassland before they fan out to the west, east and south

Close to our home are rough tracks and footpaths that lead through woodland and heather moors, it being possible to literally walk for days without meeting another person

For the less energetic the lane that leads from the duck pond crosses part of the moors and from this are breathtaking 360 degree views; on a still day the silence actually hurts your ears

There are four massive reservoirs, created by flooding the valleys, one being about two miles long

Our next village to the south, ten or so miles away across the moor from Ellingstring, is the small hamlet of Middlemoor; perched on the top of a steep hill with only one narrow dead end lane leading to it

To the east of Middlemoor the landscape is green and arable but to the west and south the purple heather moors become even wilder and remote
